Breaking: Gunman held as Ekweremadu, wife, son, escape assassination attempt


Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, in the early hours of Tuesday escaped what appeared to be a threat on his life as armed assailants invaded his Abuja residence.
The incident which occurred around 4am, saw the assailants breached upthe security at Ekweremadu’s Apo Quarters residence, to gain entry into his house.
In a short post shared on his Facebook page on Monday, Ekweremadu shared his experience of the incident and how he survived the plot of the assailants.
It was learnt that the attackers took hold of Ekweremadu son who was in the building at the time to incidence, and accosted him to the Senator’s bedroom.
But struggle ensued at Ekweremadu’s bedroom, leading to the arrest of one of the assailants, while others escaped.
Dangerous weapons and housekeeping devices were recovered from him.
It was learnt that the attackers could not immediately shooting after gaining access to the residence in order not to alert security personnel on duty to their presence.
Effort to make the arrested member of the gang to give information on the reason behind the attack was not successful and was later handed over to the Apo Police Division.
Ekweremadu, his wife, and one of his sons were in the house when the incident occurred.
This is not the first time Ekweremadu will survive attempt on his life as he escaped similar attempt in November 17, 2015.
Even though the 2015 incident was reported to security agencies, nothing is yet to be heard on the issue.
The senator representing Kogi West district, Dino Melaye, also confirmed the attack on Ekweremadu, describing the incident as troubling.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Melaye said he had called the Deputy President to the Senate over the incident, adding that the apprehended assailant has been handed to the Police.
“Just spoke to Senator Ike Ekweremadu. There was an attempt to assasinate him about 4am this morning. One of the assains was arrested after serious wrestling. He has been handed over to the police in Apo Police Station. We are in Perilious times but God will continue to be God,” he tweeted.
